Hey, you. Yes, you. Oh boy! Do I have a game for you. It’s called Disney Lorcana, and it’s a new trading card game by Disney and Ravensburger that lets you summon and control glimmers of Disney characters using magical inks. Let’s dive in on this Disney Lorcana review!
What are glimmers, you ask? Well, they are versions of Disney characters that can appear as familiar friends or in fantastically reimagined forms. For example, you can have Belle as a Beast Tamer, Hercules as a God of Strength, or Stitch as a Galactic Emperor. Sounds awesome, right?
At the moment, Disney Lorcana is not yet available to play. This exciting TCG game is set to be released in August 2023, and I’m eagerly anticipating its arrival. I’m looking forward to trying it out for myself and sharing my thoughts with all of you once it’s out!
This is not the final review for Disney Lorcana. Instead, this is an in-progress review that will be continually updated after the game’s release. Here, you’ll find an overview of the game mechanics, its strengths and weaknesses, and which audience it caters to. Rest assured, this review provides an honest and unbiased opinion.
Gameplay 101: A Short Review Of Disney Lorcana’s Mechanics
If you’re wondering how to play Disney Lorcana, don’t worry. The game is easy to learn but hard to master, with plenty of strategic choices and surprises. The game is played with two players or more, each with their own deck of atleast 60 cards. Each player also has an “inkwell”, where they can store their ink cards face down.
The goal of the game is to collect 20 lore points before your opponents does. Lore points are earned by exerting (turning sideways) your character cards to quest or use their abilities. Questing gives you one lore point per character card exerted, while abilities can give you more lore points depending on the card.
To play a card from your hand, you need to pay its ink cost by exerting ink cards from your inkwell. Each card has an ink color and an ink number on the top left corner. The ink color tells you which type of ink the card belongs to: Amber (Adventure), Amethyst (Fantasy), Emerald (Nature), Ruby (Villainy), Sapphire (Trickery), or Steel (Technology).
The ink number tells you how much ink you need to pay to play the card.
There are three types of cards in the game: Characters, Items, and Actions. Characters are the main cards that you use to quest, attack, defend, and use abilities. Items are cards that you attach to your characters to enhance them or give them new abilities. Actions are cards that you play once for an immediate effect and then discard.
But there are also some special types of cards in the game: Songs. Songs are actions that have a musical note symbol on them. You can play them for free by exerting a character with the same ink number as the song.
In Disney Lorcana TCG, players take turns and follow a three-phase sequence consisting of the Ready Phase, Ink Phase, and Main Phase.
- Ready Phase: You “ready” your exerted cards by turning them upright and draw one card from your deck.
- Ink Phase: You may play one card from your hand face down into your inkwell as an ink card.
- Main Phase: You may play any number of cards from your hand by paying their ink costs. You may also exert your character cards to quest, use abilities, or attack your opponent’s character cards. You may do these actions in any order and as many times as you want, as long as you have enough ink and unexerted character cards.
The game ends when one player collects 20 lore points or when one player runs out of cards in their deck. The player who runs out of cards loses.
Disney Lorcana’s gameplay is fast-paced and engaging, with a unique blend of strategy and luck. The game’s mechanics are easy to pick up, but offer enough depth to keep things interesting.
In this brief Disney Lorcana review of the gameplay, we have explored why this TCG is worth checking out. Overall the game is well-designed and provides an enjoyable experience for both casual and hardcore gamers.
